Everything you need to know about filing taxes and staying compliant in Pakistan.

Getting started

What is Filing.pk and how does it work?
Filing.pk is Pakistan's hassle-free online tax portal. You create a free account, choose the service you need — NTN registration, income tax filing, sales tax, company registration and more — upload your documents securely and pay online. Our qualified tax consultants then handle the filing with the FBR on your behalf and keep you updated until it's done, 100% online and at prices up to 30% below other portals. Explore our services.
What documents do I need to file my income tax return?
For a salaried return you typically need your CNIC, a salary certificate from your employer, your bank statements, and details of any assets (property, vehicles, investments) for your wealth statement. If you have other income, or tax already deducted on utilities, mobile, vehicles and so on, keep those certificates handy too. Not sure what applies to you? Our team will tell you exactly what's needed.
How long does the whole process take?
It depends on the service. NTN registration is usually completed in 1–2 working days, income tax returns in 3–5 working days, and company registration in 3–10 working days subject to name approval. The expected turnaround is shown on every service page before you order.

Becoming a filer

What is a “filer” and the Active Taxpayers List (ATL)?
A filer is a taxpayer whose name appears on the FBR's Active Taxpayers List (ATL) because they have filed their latest income tax return. Being on the ATL is what officially makes you a filer and entitles you to the lower withholding tax rates that apply to many everyday transactions.
I'm salaried and my employer already deducts tax — do I still need to file?
Yes. Even if tax is deducted from your salary, you should still file your annual return. Filing keeps you on the ATL as a filer, avoids non-filing penalties, and lets you adjust or reclaim taxes you have already paid. Without filing you are treated as a non-filer and pay higher rates elsewhere. File your salaried return.
What are the benefits of becoming a filer?
Filers pay significantly lower withholding tax on bank transactions, vehicle registration and token fees, property transfers, dividends and more. Filers can also claim tax credits, for example on approved investments and donations. For most people the annual saving is far greater than the cost of filing.
Is there a penalty for not filing my tax return?
Yes. Non-filing can attract a penalty under the Income Tax Ordinance, on top of the higher withholding tax non-filers pay on everyday transactions. There is also a late filing surcharge — Rs 25,000 for individuals — to get back on the Active Taxpayers List if you file after the deadline. Filing on time is almost always far cheaper than staying a non-filer.
What is a wealth statement and do I have to file one?
A wealth statement is a summary of your assets, liabilities and personal expenses. Resident individuals who file an income tax return are required to file a wealth statement alongside it, reconciling how your assets changed over the year — even if you own very little.
When is the tax year and the filing deadline in Pakistan?
Pakistan's tax year runs from 1 July to 30 June. For most individuals and salaried taxpayers the annual return is due by 30 September, although the FBR sometimes announces extensions. Filing early avoids the last-minute rush and any late surcharge.
